Researchers

The Congenital Heart Initiative (CHI) and CHI-RON are building the most robust patient-driven research infrastructure focused on adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD) in the United States. We invite academic, clinical, and community-based researchers to partner with us to advance knowledge, improve outcomes, and inform lifelong care for the ACHD community.

Collaborating with the CHI

We support investigator-led research that aligns with our mission and values. Whether you’re seeking access to patient-reported outcomes, EHR-linked datasets, or a diverse patient community, CHI provides a unique platform to power your work.

How to Submit a Proposal

To propose a manuscript, abstract, grant, or presentation using CHI or CHI-RON data:

  1. Complete the proposal intake form.
    Download Here

  2. Email the form to: ACHDresearch@childrensnational.org

  3. Proposals will be reviewed by the CHI Patient and Scientific Advisory Board for alignment with ongoing work, scientific priority, and feasibility.

  4. Selected proposals will be presented to the CHI Steering Committee and advisory board.

Please submit all abstracts at least one week prior to the deadline, and conference posters or presentations 2–4 weeks before the event. Allow up to 10 business days for approval.

Publication & Authorship Guidelines

All publications must follow CHI-RON authorship and acknowledgment requirements. Key highlights include:

  • Corresponding author is responsible for submission logistics and communication

  • Authorship order should be agreed upon early and revisited as needed.

  • Each CHI-RON data-contributing site may suggest a co-author

  • Patient co-authors are recommended by the CHI Advisory Board

  • All authors must meet ICMJE authorship criteria

Acknowledging CHI and CHI-RON

All accepted papers, presentations, and proposals must acknowledge CHI or CHI-RON and PCORnet, as applicable. Standardized language will be provided. You must notify the CHI team within 15 days of acceptance.

For complete publication guidelines, including authorship criteria, proposal submission steps, and acknowledgment language, please download the CHI Publication Policy.
